What’s our favourite snack during the summers? Ice Cream! And is it okay to share your favourite summer snack with your favourite fur friend? Well, the answer isn’t as straight forward as you think. The reason why we specify ‘vanilla’ ice cream over all the other varieties is because it is the safest flavour for your dog. This does not mean you should give your dog vanilla ice cream every other day. Here are somethings you should keep in mind if you don’t want your pooch to miss out on vanilla ice cream during a hot summer evening.
- Go for a rich quality ice cream brand- i.e. one with less sugar and no artificial sweeteners
- Never give your dog an ice cream that contains Xylitol. This is a common ingredient found in products using artificial sweeteners and is very toxic for dogs
- Remember, a few spoons once in a blue moon is not harmful. Please do not make this a habit.
Despite the precautions it is always better to go for healthier summer treats. Here are a few options that you might like to consider:
Homemade popsicles are a canine favourite and they are a better option because you can be as versatile with them as your heart desires. You can make a vegetarian variety with dog safe fruits like apples and coconut water. Or, you can make a non vegetarian popsicle with boiled meat and chicken broth. Let it solidify in a popsicle stand (or not, if you don’t have one) and serve it frozen. They will love you for it!
Frozen Yogurt (Curd)
An occasional frozen yogurt treat is much better for your dog than ice cream. Firstly, it is easy on their stomach. Secondly it cools them on a hot sunny day. The best thing about yogurt is that you can add dog safe flavours to it. For instance you can add banana or honey or peanut butter, mix it well and let it set. You will make your pooch’s evening with this delicious summer treat. But remember this is a heavy treat and though it is a better substitute than ice cream, remember not to make a habit out of it.
So, here are our alternative to those who cannot resist puppy when they have ice cream on a hot sunny day. Do you have healthy snacking alternatives during the summer? Share it with us on our social media handles. We will love to hear from you!
